dc.descriptionForensic anthropologists seek to decipher traces of anonymous dead, to restitute identities of human remains and to provide their families with the possibility to conclude mourning and even of justice. The article explores the contributions and meanings of forensic anthropology as state-independent practice beyond a mereley criminalistic approach, as it was conceptualized by the Argentine pioneers after the last dictatorship in this nation. I conceive this practice as a sort of arqueology of contemporary terror that seeks to confront a specific violence as the forced disappearance of persons and the deshumanization of their dead bodies. The article proposes reading forensic anthropology as a 'situated cience', with its complexities and ambigueties, that operates between nameless bones (the human remains) and names without bodies (the so-called disappeared) in settings of violent pasts such as Argentina or Guatemala, and especially in Mexico, where mass graves became the new symbol of a horrified present.en-US
dc.descriptionLos antropólogos forenses buscan descifrar las huellas de la muerte anónima, devolverles a los restos humanos un nombre y a sus familiares la posibilidad de hacer el duelo y también la justicia. El artículo explora la aportación y los sentidos de la antropología forense ejercida por fuera del Estado y más allá de una mera criminalistica, tal y como fue conceptualizada por los pioneros argentinos al término de la última dictadura militar de aquel país. Propongo concebirla como una suerte de arqueología del terror contemporáneo, que enfrenta una violencia específica como es la desaparición forzada de personas y la deshumanización de sus restos. Me interesa leerla como una ciencia situada, con sus dilemas y complejidades, que opera entre huesos sin nombre (los restos anónimos) y nombres sin cuerpos (los llamados ‘desaparecidos’), en relación con violencias del pasado en escenarios como Argentina y Guatemala, y sobre todo en México, donde las fosas clandestinas se han vuelto el nuevo lugar común de un presente horrorizado.es-ES
